Tones and Saturation

Writer's picture: April FrenchApril French

Previously, we learned how white and black affect colors. But, what would happen if we mixed the two, and used gray to alter colors?

Gray, when used with any color, affects the intensity or saturation of that color.

Revisiting our color wheel, the outer segments red, yellow, and blue are the most saturated. But, adding gray would turn these colors into tones.

In fashion, we understand tonal colors as "dusty," because their saturation is cut with gray. Examples include colors like mauve which is a dusty, pale purple, rose, which is a dusty, medium pink, or olive, which is a deep, dusty yellow-green.

Activity:

Take a look in your closet. Do you see any articles of clothing or shoes with colors that could be considered tones?
